Make an Appointment to Get Things Done

Never seem to have enough time to get some things done?  Concerned because a big project is due next week and you don’t see the time to get it done?  Do you feel “out of control” and don’t know what to do next?  Why not schedule time with yourself to focus on those tasks?

We typically are not late for appointments or blow off scheduled meetings.  We are there – on time and ready to go.  I was thinking yesterday how to get some tasks finished this week that are overdue.  My week is fairly open and I have some large blocks of time available.  But, history has shown that those blocks of time fill quickly if I allow it to happen.

I reviewed my schedule and decided that I could use these blocks of time to get the overdue tasks finished.  I began by assigning each project or task to a time slot and decided what I would accomplish during that time.  I think it will work…after all, I have scheduled a “meeting” with myself and I will be there on time and ready to go.

If something else comes up, I still have some open time available, but not nearly as much.  I can put the new event into one of the remaining time slots.  What I won’t do is cancel “My Meeting with Myself” to accomplish the new tasks.

I would recommend that you take 30 minutes at the beginning of each week to plan your work.  Assign blocks of time to the tasks and projects you need to work on.  Don’t simply leave blocks of open time.  Fill them up with scheduled “Meetings with Yourself.”
